Revised steering gear

Today Flo disassembled and cleaned the steering gear and column. It was hard to pull the steering arm off but now it’s seperated in parts. Underneath you can see the good condition.

After cleaning all parts of the transmissionon you can see in which condition they are.And its better than we belived! They were very dirty, corroded and rusty but it could be worse. We fixed the differential with parts from Flo’s old 1600i transmission because the old was badly used. The cogwheels fit like they are much older than they really are. Condition of the transmission…

Today we opend the gearbox to have a look on the inside. We found things which doesn’t belong to a transmission. It is full of water, sand an old oil. It almost seems that someone has driven this thing throgh african sandy waterholes like Herbie did. Good thing this day was that the front axle is fresh coated and ready for installing.

One week later Flo is happy to got his bus back. No bad suprises and a rust free floor. Great work! Thanks to KBB/Meissl. Now its time to get starded on the bodywork and finish the axles. But! There is one problem… …it seems the gerbox was run full of water a few times ago. After sandblasting and cleaning it was ready for paint but we decided to strip down all parts to see how bad the condition is. Tomorrow…
